How to Bet Baseball
There are all types of strategies for betting on baseball. Everything from just choosing your favorite team through doing a deep statistical analysis to determine the winner. Some people don't take it too seriously and make an occasional wager just for fun. For the serious bettor, there is a whole lot more of information to factor into your wagering decision.
Understanding the Odds
Key to making a smart bet on baseball is being able to understand the odds. Assuming that you know how to read a money line or run line, the next most important thing to know is the odds.
Not just which team is the favorite. You will know the favorite by simply looking for the plus or minus sign on the wager line. If you see a team with a -170 next to its name, obviously, they are expected to win.
Realizing, everything does not always happen as expected, particularly in an often unpredictable game, you must rely on your own instincts to determine if the line is fair. If you think the underdog really has a good chance to win, make a wager on them. If you think that the favorite is a can't miss winner, well, you can bet on them. Unless you are unusually lucky or skilled in predicting the outcome of games, chances are you'll come out close to even over time.
Who Is Pitching?
This is the key to picking many games. Oddsmakers are fully aware that a star pitcher can dominate a game and accordingly, make the team that the pitcher plays for, the favorite. When you make a bet, the starting pitchers are listed.
If you make your bet and then, before the first pitch is thrown, the listed starting pitcher, does not start, the bet is declared a "no action" bet and your money is returned. That is normally the case, unless you make a "team action" bet, where it does not matter who pitches, just that the game is official and your team wins.
Don't Fall in Love With Your Favorite Team
This is often the downfall of many gamblers. They come into Vegas for a few days and go crazy betting on the home team. It is well known that even the best teams are going to lose at least one out of every three games they play.
Just because you are a fan of a certain team and always root for them to win, does not mean that they will. Evaluate each potential game, based on the odds and then make an educated choice. When you cash your winning bet, you won't care that your favorite team lost.
A Betting Service
People who love to bet are always looking for an edge. They may engage the help of a betting service who, for a fee, will give you their top picks and strategy for wagering. Take it for what it is, advice from another point of view, maybe it will pay off, and maybe it won't.
